Like all animated films from Disney and Pixar studios, Red alert is full of amusing little references and winks intended for the most attentive spectators. The proof with these 10 easter eggs that slipped into the film.
A reference dusk in Red alert
Melancholic and detached, Priya appears to be a rather dark and mysterious teenager, the antithesis of Meilin’s sunny, high-flying personality. No wonder, then, that she was caught reading” Nightfall in the halls of the college. A novel, whose cover is eerily similar to that of the film dusk and whose author, “Roberta Moyer” appears to be a small contraction between Robert Pattinson and Stephenie Meyer, the novelist behind the vampire saga. It should also be noted that the young girl’s first reaction on discovering Mei as a red panda is to ask her if she is a werewolf…well, well.
A nod to coconut and his music
When Mei is swooning over a boy she meets in the school hallway, we notice that the latter is wearing a flocked t-shirt with the name “Escápula”. This is a nod to the movie coconutin which the famous Rock band Escápula performs on stage during the singing competition in the world of the Ancestors.
The famous room A113 in Red Alert
Like many Pixar directors, Domee Shi wanted to incorporate this little easter egg into his feature film. It can therefore be found on the tracing wheelbarrow that Meilin’s father uses to form the ritual circle in the stadium where 4*Town give their concert. A113 thus refers to a CalArts classroom where some iconic lamp studio animators studied.
The Pixar Ball
Again, the star balloon is a recurring element in Pixar animated films. Yellow with a red star and a blue line, it always bursts discreetly into the studio’s feature films. In Red alertit is possible to quickly see him floating in Tyler’s swimming pool, at the time of the birthday party of the young boy.
The Easter egg of Upside down
Director of the adorable BagDomee Shi did not forget to include several nods to Pixar shorts in his film. The proof with this little Purl keychain, which hangs on the shelf of Meilin’s office, right next to his Tamagotchi. In 2018, the filmmaker had also lent her voice to one of the characters in Kristen Lester’s short film. Coincidence? Certainly not !
The intrusion of My Burrow
In addition to purl, there is also a reference to My Burrow by Madeline Sharafian, when Mei draws portraits of the convenience store cashier in her notebook. A notebook whose cover is adorned with several stickers, including one representing the little bunny from the Pixar short film.
A little hello to the Simpsons in Red alert
When Meilin greets the two statues that are at the entrance of the temple held by her parents, we notice that she calls them Bart and Lisa. A reference to the characters of simpsons which will not have escaped anyone, of course!
A quick appearance of Nemo
You really had to be careful to see Pixar’s little fish! Nemo actually makes a furtive appearance during the meeting held in the sanitary facilities between Mei, Priya, Miriam and Abby after the disastrous PE course. On one of the toilet doors, we see a sticker of Marin’s son behind Meilin’s waving arms.
A preview of the cat Buzz Lightning
In Red alertDomee Shi not only referenced Pixar’s past, but also its future. The fans of toy storywaiting for the feature film Buzz Lightning impatiently will have therefore certainly noticed the sticker of the robot cat of the Space Ranger which decorates Miriam’s skateboard. An adorable little animal with which the general public has already been able to get to know in the trailer for the film.
The presence of the Pizza Planet chain in Red alert
Among other references to toy storythere is also the iconic Pizza Planet restaurant chain. Present in several animated films from the studios, the gastronomic franchise is therefore stealthily returning to Red alert. We actually see a delivery car pass as Mei crosses the city to join the 4*Town concert. An easter egg only intended for lynx eyes!
