Crisis at CHSLD Herron | Marguerite Blais can’t take any more “jibes”

(Quebec) Machine-gunned with questions at the Blue Room, treated as “incompetent” by the Liberals, the Minister responsible for Seniors and Caregivers, Marguerite Blais, spent a bad quarter of an hour at the Blue Room on Thursday. A hunt for the culprit who goes beyond the limits, she argues, on the verge of tears.

Four Liberal MPs questioned Minister Blais during question period in the House on her management of the crisis that raged at CHSLD Herron during the first wave of the pandemic.

They accuse him of having done “no follow-up” for 12 days after being alerted by email on the night of March 29 to 30, 2020 about the dramatic situation in this establishment. He is also criticized for not having sent the information back to the Prime Minister’s Office. The government maintains that it learned of the extent of the tragedy at the CHSLD Herron in the daily article The Gazette April 10.

“On March 29, we knew in the government that there was this tragedy. The Minister’s responsibility was both to inform the crisis unit, it was to take action and also, it was above all to check what was going to happen, ”launched Liberal MP Pierre Arcand.

“What did the minister do on March 30, March 31, March 1East April, in this crisis unit? What did she do ? How could she have been so incompetent? “, added the MP for Outremont, a word that the Speaker of the House François Paradis asked him to withdraw. The exchanges were particularly bitter on Thursday; Mr. Paradis had to put Caquiste leader Simon Jolin-Barrette and Liberal whip Filomena Rotiroti in their place.

Visibly shaken by the exit of Mr. Arcand, Marguerite Blais replied: “I will remain calm, Mr. President. They call me incompetent, but that’s a perception. I’ll tell you a little about what I did. Emotive, she listed actions taken by the government such as the training of 10,000 beneficiary attendants and the adoption of the law to fight against elder abuse. “I did that, me, for three and a half years”, she decided.

Three other Liberal MPs followed her through Question Period. Mme Blais insisted that coroner Géhane Kamel is continuing her investigation and invited her opponents to wait for her report.

On leaving the Chamber, Marguerite Blais said she had “the impression that we are looking for a culprit”. “I had a multitude of questions today. I stood up, ”she dropped, lamenting the tone of the exchanges. “I think it goes a long way. It may be because we are going on an election campaign. […] I will be 72 years old. If I honestly thought I was wrong, would I get bombarded like this? “, she pleaded.

“Honestly, when someone stands up and says that I am incompetent and that I was part of the Liberal Party government, why did they keep me for so long? Launched the former Liberal minister who became a caquist.

“There are words that touch us. We’re human beings… Getting called all sorts of things, and not just by MPs. When you read the newspapers, I got a lot of jokes there, and then… that’s it. I am a human being and it is hurtful, ”she added, on the verge of tears.
