Hans Zimmer concluded his three concerts at the Accor Arena with a spectacular show. We were there.
The timid sound of tuning instruments can already be heard behind the screen in the colors of Ukraine. Tonight the show will be performed in tribute to the land of Zelensky, where Hans Zimmer’s orchestra originated. At 8:15 p.m., the digital curtain rises in an electrifying piece, revealing about fifty musicians. All are dressed in black, except for Zimmer, in blue and yellow. Hands in the pockets, the master of ceremonies seems to be at Bercy like at home. It begins with a speech on this music that unites, far from social distancing and the horror of war. Before moving on to his famous soundtracks: “Dune”, “Inception” then “Wonder Woman”. Winks to his musicians in passing, for whom he is full of praise.
The stunning scenography sublimates the talent of the orchestra, alternating flashes of light and close-ups of the hands of the musicians dancing on their instruments. The crowd can thus feel closer to the cellist Tina Guo, transported on the devilishly known theme of “Pirates of the Caribbean”. End of an exhilarating first part.
The second act takes the visual level up a notch with an almost epileptic, vibrant production. On “Interstellar,” a giant disco ball placed above the audience creates the illusion of a constellation in the room, illuminating a dancer wrapped in white ribbons. His waltz several meters above the ground is bewitching. And then, the magic of this moment is interrupted by a familiar voice. The original singer of the “Lion King” music enters the stage to loud applause. On the screen, videos of the recording of “The Story of Life”, thirty years ago. The public, no longer just a spectator, does not shun this only opportunity of the evening to sing along.
On recall, and from the first two notes, spectators recognize the cult melody of “James Bond”, while the silhouette of 007 takes shape behind the musicians. Hans Zimmer offers one last song. He settles down at the piano for “Time”, taken from the film “Inception”, which he will end one-on-one with a violinist, under a subdued light… until it reaches complete darkness. The audience rises for a more than deserved standing ovation. The kind to shake the biggest rock stars.
