MLS: CF Montreal claim a 2-1 victory at the home of the New York Red Bulls

Saturday was Wilfried Nancy’s birthday and also the day of Gabriel Gervais’ first official release as President and CEO of CF Montreal. Their players presented them with a nice gift with the help, admittedly, of a rival.

For only the second time in its history, CF Montreal picked up points in the standings at Red Bull Arena thanks to a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday afternoon.

On May 8, 2019, the team then called the Montreal Impact earned a win by the same score. In its 11 other attempts, the Montreal team had only suffered defeats, some of them by scathing scores.

“It’s difficult to play a good game against the Red Bulls because they put a lot of pressure. We saw the first 15 minutes, we were in trouble. It was a little difficult to get out, to be a little higher on the ground. After we chained three or four consecutive passes, we found our game a bit. Afterwards, we did what had to be done, ”Nancy first analyzed.

“I think we played good football against the Red Bulls, knowing that it’s not easy to play against them. Of course, it could have been much better, but today the players showed their personality to get this victory. It’s because of the resilience they have. That’s why they came today, ”added the head coach of the Montreal team.

Romell Quioto scored the decisive goal in the 81st minute, following a disastrous exit from goalkeeper Carlos Coronel, who lost the ball near the center circle as he tried to restart the New York attack after a clearance by Rudy Camacho.

After finding himself with the ball at his feet, Quioto was able to sprint towards the opposing goal and he had no difficulty pushing it into a completely deserted goal.

Camacho, also in the second half, scored the other goal for CF Montreal (2-3-1) which signed a second victory in a row and played a third consecutive game without suffering defeat, all on the road.

This second win in a row on the road allowed the Montreal squad to equal a team mark achieved on four other occasions, in 2013, 2015, 2019 and 2020.

Above all, this victory was acquired after CF Montreal conceded the first goal, that of Omir Fernandez against Sebastian Breza in the 14th minute.

CF Montreal players will finally have the opportunity to take to the Saputo stadium for the first time this season, next Saturday, as they host the Vancouver Whitecaps.

A painful start

With all its losses accumulated over the years at Red Bull Arena, the Montreal team may have developed an inferiority complex. And during the first half hour of the match, Wilfried Nancy’s men played, in fact, as if they were complexed.

The CF Montreal players lacked cohesion, multiplied the bad passes and spent almost all of those 30 minutes deep in their territory.

Controlling the ball in the Montreal area, the Red Bulls took the lead when Fernandez fired a shot from around 20 yards that appeared to deflect off Camacho’s calf before catching Breza by surprise.

Then, in the 26th minute, with Breza out of position after a failed attempt to intercept a cross, Kei Kamara saved two goals on successive shots from Aaron Long and Sean Nealis.

We don’t know if Kamara’s saves had something to do with it, but CF Montreal played much better during the last quarter of an hour of play.

So much, in fact, that he finished the first half with more shots attempted – six to five – than the Red Bulls.

Djordje Mihailovic, in the 33rd minute, and Kamal Miller, two minutes later, had good chances to score, but Coronel intervened each time.

“(The Red Bulls) are putting a lot of pressure on and we had a hard time getting out of their pressing. We had to break their pressing a bit, we didn’t succeed in the first 15-20 minutes, we were a little cornered on our goal. But we held on, we hunkered down, and we didn’t concede this second goal which could have been complicated for us, ”described Camacho.

After a slow start to the second half, CF Montreal tied the game thanks to the contribution of three defenders in the 71st minute.

Miller first slipped the ball to Alistair Johnston, who was standing quite close to him. He directed the ball towards the center of the penalty area, where Camacho had slipped.

Cleverly, with a header, Camacho deflected the ball to the right of Coronel. The ball hit the inside of the post before rolling into the back of the net.

“There was Kamal and ‘Ali’ on the side, I was already in front, so I decided to stay. There you go, I did well. We scored, there are three defenders who are in action. It’s cool! Camacho described.

Ten minutes later, Coronel made his incredible blunder and CF Montreal managed to protect their lead.
