What is Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets?

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, still directed by David Yates and written by JK Rowling, follows Crime of Grindelwald released in 2018. Basically, Fantastic Beasts is a guide book written by the British novelist which lists a plethora of creatures from the Harry Potter universe. The saga began in 2016 with Fantastic Beasts. We follow the adventures of Norbert Dragonneau, a magizoologist played by Eddie Redmayne, some sixty years before the events of the main saga.

This spin-off tells us how Albus Dumbledore (played Jude Law) defeated the dark wizard Gellert Grindlwald played by Johnny Depp, then by Mads Mikkelsen. This drastic change follows the controversy around Johnny Depp and The Sun magazine. Faced with this announcement, the fans were both confused and angry. Mads Mikkelsen found himself with the double task of satisfying the audience, but also of adapting to a team that had already shot the two previous films and the start of the third with Johnny Depp.

After the events of the Crimes of Grindelwald, resulting in the escape of the dark mage, the latter takes more and more influence and power in the wizarding world. His goal: to establish the supremacy of wizards over Muggles. This is the reason why, Albus Dumbledore, professor of defense against the dark arts, entrusts Norbert Scamander and his companions with the heavy task of thwarting Grindelwald’s plans. Involving China, Bhutan and Germany, the wizarding world will experience a real global conflict. Given the importance of the stakes, Dumbledore wonders about his role and his involvement in this war.

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets – What does the press think?

What is the verdict after the previews of the third opus of the bewitching saga of David Yates? As we write this press review, Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets has a score of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49% on Metacritic. The film is clearly not unanimous in the press. Some find it long, bringing nothing concrete to the main plot, while others salute it for its attempt, more or less successful, to raise the bar, after the perfectible The Crimes of Grindelwald. Remember that the saga is supposed to include 5 films.

However, everyone seems to agree on one point, or rather one actor in particular… it’s Mads Mikkelsen. Johnny Depp’s previous performance as Grindelwald was often referred to as “lifeless”. Mads Mikkelsen manages for his part to give him a breath of his own to the point of bursting the screen against Jude Law. The talent of the replacement black mage is clearly in the spotlight, especially if we take into account his arrival in disaster in the saga. To sum up, Fantastic Beasts 3 was better received by critics than its predecessor, without revolutionizing anything. There are still two films left in the extended universe of Harry Potter to prove that it has its place alongside one of the most profitable cinematographic saga in the history of the 7th Art.
