CINEMA – There were more than 2000 films, there are only about twenty left. Pierre Lescure, president (for the last time) of the Cannes Film Festival, and Thierry Frémaux, its general delegate, presented the official selection of this 75th edition, this Thursday April 14 during a press conference.
While we already knew that Tom Cruise would climb the steps with the sequel to Superior gun -out of competition- and that Baz Luhrmann would unveil the biopic he is devoting to Elvis, we now know the complete program of films screened from May 17 to 28 on the Croisette.
This year, 2200 films were seen by Thierry Frémaux and his team of “selectors” to keep only about fifty distributed in the different categories of this official selection.
Claire Denis and David Cronenberg in competition
In the prestigious competition, there are 18 films, including regulars at the Cannes Film Festival as usual – including four directors who have already won a Palme d’Or – but also a few surprises. In addition to the Dardenne brothers, the Japanese Kore-Eda Hirokazu or the Swedish Ruben Östlund, there are (only) three female directors.
Valeria Bruni Tedeschi will be there with The Almond Treesa feature film “very universal on what it is to live in a troupe, the vocation and also the ability of actors to endure difficulties to become what they are”, describes Thierry Frémaux. Claire Denis will present the “diplomatic thriller” stars at noon with Margaret Qualley or Robert Pattinson, while the American Kelly Reichardt is in the running with To show up.
As expected, Kirill Serebrennikov, an enfant terrible of contemporary creation who fled Russia and now lives in Berlin, is also in competition with Tchaikovsky’s wife. In another register, the feature film The crimes of the future by David Cronenberg promises a long-awaited climb of the steps with notably Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen.
Cédric Jimenez and Olivier Assayas also in selection
In “special screenings”, we find the Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa with The natural history of destructiona film on the destruction of German cities by the Allies at the end of the Second World War, alongside, among others, the barred director Quentin Dupieux with Smoking makes you cough.
A year after creating controversy in Cannes with North ferryCédric Jimenez returns this time “out of competition” with his film Novembera dive into the heart of Anti-Terrorism during the 5 days of tracking which followed the attacks of November 13th. While Nicolas Bedos will present his thriller Masquerade with Pierre Niney, Isabelle Adjani and François Cluzet.
Cannes will also make a small place for series in its “Cannes Première” section where director Olivier Assayas (Sils Maria, Personal Shopper) “will come to show some episodes” of his series Irma Vep with notably Alicia Vikander and Vincent Macaigne in the cast.
So much for this “almost complete” selection warns Thierry Frémaux, who as often plans to “tweak” his choices in the days to come with a few possible additions to the key. The Festival will open on Tuesday May 17 with a film by Michel Hazanavicius Z (like Z). The composition of the jury, meanwhile, remains for the time being one of the great unknowns of this 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.
