Gamaniel, father of the Valcin family, died on Wednesday following the accident of a plane in which he had taken place. The plane crashed near the town of Carrefour, while on its way between Port-au-Prince and Jacmel.

His son Riley lost his life on December 25 following a work accident, while clearing snow from the Grande Roue de Montréal. He was 22 when one of his clothes got caught in the ride.

Gamaniel Valcin was a pastor, a taxi driver and notably helped Haitian migrants to find accommodation upon their arrival in Montreal. Many Haitian citizens relied on him because he regularly sent money to that country.

A press conference was organized by the Valcin family at the Henri-Bourassa school auditorium.

It was a police commissioner in Haiti who curtly announced to Joey Valcin the death of his father in this crash which left 4 injured and 6 dead including the pilot.

“I would tell you that my mother needs the support of the people of Quebec more than ever before,” he said.

Joey confirmed his father’s body was safe in a morgue but appealed to Ottawa for help with the repatriation. “I ask that the government authorities repatriate my father’s body, because the situation in Haiti does not allow me to go there to pay him a last tribute,” said the bereaved son.

An investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances surrounding this accident reports Joey Valcin, but according to him it is the condition of the plane that is the cause. “The plane was in very poor condition, and I don’t think it should have taken off,” he said.
